TPB #48 – Flash Duration Verification

Posted by:

This video goes over the Flash Test Menu and finds why it hasn’t been reporting correct flash durations. The problem turned out to be the light sensor being used is not fast enough. To make this mode work reliably we’ll need a new light sensor that quickly transitions from <1V to >4V. I estimate a responce time of less then 5 us would be good for standard flashes and less than 0.1 ...

TPB #42 – Do Optical Slave Flashes Work with High Speed Photos

Posted by:

In this week’s video I look at the lag introduced by using a master flash to optically trigger a slave flash. Then I look at this extra lag and see how that would impact some common high speed photography cases like photographing a moving bullet and water droplets.

* Video about measuring Flash Duration
* Video about the MultiFlash board

TPB #25 – Understanding Shutter Lag

Posted by:

This week I explain shutter lag and how it affects high speed photography. The main message this week is that shutter lag at around 100ms is 1000x longer than flash duration. So for high speed photography people need to often use an external flash rather than relying on a shutter. This is usually accomplished by using bulb mode on your camera in a dark room and using a photo trigger like the ...
